Symal is part of the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke, Arcadis and WSP. Our scope of work includes a new interchange connecting the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, major road and bridge upgrades between Burke Road and Tram Road, smart traffic management technology upgrades and new noise protection to meet Victoria’s toughest traffic noise standards. The local community will also benefit from new and upgraded walking and cycling connections, upgrades to Koonung Creek Reserve and revitalised wetlands and open spaces.

The role:

As our Alliance progresses through delivery, we are looking for a Senior Health and Safety Manager to join the Health and Safety team in a permanent role.

Reporting to the Package Director, with a dotted line to the Head of Health and Safety, you will take the lead responsibility for all health and safety aspects of your package within the Project, and ensure works are completed in accordance with the contract conditions, regulations and Alliance procedures.

Your every day:

  • Manage, lead and mentor a large team of Safety professionals to ensure continued professional growth of personnel, and to always drive a ‘best for Alliance’ approach.
  • Provide expert H&S advice, support, information and leadership to the Package SLT, and wider Alliance when required.
  • Ensure all requirements within the Alliance Health and Safety Management Plan, its related sub-plans and the EBTA HSMS are implemented, maintained and communicated by the Project team
  • Facilitate and provide input into the project HS workshops to ensure all HS risks are identified, analysed, mitigated and controlled, through the championing of the ‘Engineered Safety’ philosophy.   
  • Work closely with the EBTA Systems and Governance team to lead / facilitate contractual and corporate H&S related audits, in line with the EBTA audit schedule.  
  • Oversee the management of corrective and preventative actions, relevant to the delivery package, ensuring actions are appropriate and managed accordingly.
  • Coach project personnel to identify and influence ways to drive improvements for continuous HS improvement  
  • Assist Project personnel with FSR reviews & Inspections through a risk and program-based approach.
  • Review and provide input into Work Method Statements scopes of work and work packs to ensure all HS requirements and deliverables are captured.  
  • Liaise with key project stakeholders (client, regulator, registered employee organisations etc.) to ensure HS issues are resolved in a timely manner.  
  • Facilitate and or support project personnel in incident investigations including class 1 events.
  • Ensure investigations are thorough and Root Cause corrective actions are appropriate.  
  • Ensure project personnel understand and implement the Injury Management process as required 

Who are you?

  • More than 10 year’s experience in Health and Safety roles, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity on major infrastructure or civil construction projects eg. road, rail or utilities
  • Formal qualifications in Workplace Health and Safety (Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree) with strong working knowledge of OHS legislation, codes of practice and major project requirements, preferably Victorian
  • Proven experience developing, implementing and managing HS systems and project-specific Safety Management Plans in alignment with client and regulatory expectations on Tier 1-2 infrastructure projects
  • Proven experience leading HS performance across complex, high-risk construction environments with self-perform workforces and sub-contractors
  • Demonstrated success leading, managing and mentoring a team across multiple work fronts, driving a strong and supportive culture, fostering capability development and consistency
  • Skilled in conducting incident investigations, risk assessments, audits and client-reporting, with a track record of driving a safety-first culture across all levels of delivery
  • Ability to travel to and work from site offices in the eastern suburbs
  • Australian or New Zealand Citizenship or Permanent Residency required, as this is a permanent, full-time position
