Workshop Supervisor | Diesel Fitter |
Trucks, Trailers, Crushing & Mobile Plant | Brendale QLD | Competitive salary

Symal Assets is the national plant division of the Symal Group. We own, maintain and hire a large fleet of earthmoving and heavy mobile equipment, P0; trucks and trailers, crushing plant, that delivers major civil infrastructure projects across Australia. We're looking for an experienced Workshop Supervisor to run our Brendale workshop and own the compliance, availability and reliability of our Queensland fleet.

This is an autonomous, hands-on leadership role for a trade-qualified Diesel Fitter. You'll run the workshop as your own: setting priorities, leading the team and making the calls that keep our truck and trailer fleet compliant, our fixed crushing plant running and our mobile equipment ready for work. You'll do it from new workshop facilities, backed by the scale, systems and support of a large plant division.

Why Join Symal?

  • Autonomous role with genuine ownership of the workshop and its results
  • New workshop facilities
  • Part of Symal Assets, a large national plant division within the Symal Group supported by a Workshop Manager and Regional Maintenance Manager
  • Diverse fleet of trucks and trailers, fixed crushing plant, earthmoving and heavy mobile equipment
  • Monday to Friday roster, home every night
  • Strong safety culture and supportive leadership team
  • Long-term career development opportunities within the Symal Group

About the Role

Reporting to the Regional Maintenance Manager, you'll run the Brendale workshop with a high level of autonomy. You'll be accountable for three outcomes: a compliant truck and trailer fleet, available fixed crushing plant and reliable mobile equipment. You'll lead a team of up to five tradespeople and apprentices while working closely with Operations, Hire and Allocations and project sites to maximise fleet availability and minimise downtime.

Truck and trailer fleet

  • Own heavy vehicle maintenance and compliance under the Heavy Vehicle National Law and NHVR requirements
  • Manage registrations, roadworthy inspections, periodic servicing and defect clearances
  • Keep maintenance, inspection and repair records complete and audit ready
  • Support the business in meeting its Chain of Responsibility obligations

Fixed crushing plant

  • Plan and deliver maintenance that maximises crushing plant availability
  • Coordinate planned shutdowns, wear part changeouts and major component replacements
  • Respond quickly to breakdowns to minimise lost production
  • Track availability and reliability, identify repeat failures and fix the root cause

Mobile equipment

  • Coordinate preventative maintenance, servicing and breakdown repairs across earthmoving and heavy mobile plant
  • Oversee diagnostics, fault finding and major repairs
  • Ensure plant is serviced, inspected and ready for work before it goes out on hire

Workshop leadership

  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of up to five workshop personnel
  • Manage workshop scheduling and committed return to service dates
  • Manage parts, inventory, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Control workshop costs and work within budget
  • Use the maintenance management system to plan work and keep asset records accurate
  • Drive workshop safety, productivity and continuous improvement
  • Build a positive, accountable and high performing team culture

About You

You'll bring strong technical expertise, practical leadership capability and the confidence to run a workshop with minimal supervision.

  • Trade qualification as a Diesel Fitter, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or Mobile Plant Mechanic
  • Previous experience as a Workshop Supervisor, Workshop Manager or Leading Hand
  • Experience maintaining trucks and trailers with a working knowledge of HVNL and NHVR compliance
  • Experience with fixed or mobile crushing and screening plant
  • Strong experience with earthmoving and heavy mobile plant
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate workshop teams
  • Comfortable working autonomously, setting priorities and making decisions
  • Strong fault finding and diagnostic capability
  • Experience using maintenance management systems and workshop software
  • Sound understanding of maintenance planning, compliance and cost control
  • Current Driver Licence (HR licence or higher highly regarded)
  • NHVAS maintenance accreditation or heavy vehicle inspection experience highly regarded

Role Requirements

  • Available to work 6:00am to 4:00pm or 7:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday
  • Based at our Brendale workshop, north of Brisbane
  • Willing to lead from the front and remain hands-on when required

You're the Leader We're Looking For

You take pride in running an organised workshop, developing your team, solving problems and returning equipment to Operations when promised. You understand that a non-compliant truck, a stopped crusher or a broken-down machine costs the business. You set the standard through accountability, technical credibility and consistent delivery.
